Mathematical molecules? In Issue 4 we reported on an amazing molecule that could make Boolean logic decisions on its chemical inputs and produce an "on-off" light signal depending on whether or not the logic was being satisfied. Now, Prasanna 'AP' de Silva and Nathan McClenaghan at Queen's University Belfast have taken related molecular logic gates on the first step towards a true molecular computer by getting them to do mathematical addition.

A well-oiled chemical plant Reactive Reports has reported on novel methods for turning raw hydrocarbons into useful materials previously (Issue 6), now an alliance of industry and academic scientists is hoping to make agricultural plants, and not petrochemical plants, the source of the ingredients for some plastics and other products.

ACD/Labs proudly announced the winner of the first ACD/Labs Scholar of the Year Award at the ACS meeting on 27th March, in San Francisco.

??? There were plenty of entries for the judges to wade through and with work presented being of the highest scientific standard the final decision was a difficult one to make. The three winners, in order, were Gy?rgyi Kov?cs, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, University of Szeged, Hungary, Valentine P. Ananikov, ND Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, and Oleh Tanchak, the Department of Applied Chemical and Biological Sciences, Ryerson Polytechnic University. Honourable mention was given to Jiansuo Wang, Institute of Physical Chemistry & College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking University. Reactive Reports extends a hearty congratulations to all the winners!
